A river delta: There’s more than one way to reach the sea. Software rarely remembers this.
Software is silently converging on the needs of the default user. As products get optimized, measured, and refined — often with AI and data science — daily life is being tuned to a narrower and narrower band of human ability. It's regression to the mean at global scale. Whoever doesn't fit gets left behind.
The same tools can do the opposite. Instead of optimizing for the mean, we can design for specific people and serve them exceptionally well. This site is where I work out what that looks like.
I'm Tim Hulshof — a builder, with a past life as a mathematician and data scientist. Most of my work sits in places where software has to hold up under real-world pressure: healthcare, long-term care, systems where people depend on the thing working.
